The comics „Of the Black Woman Henrietta and Her Immortal Cells“ tells the story based on real, although fantastically sounding events of cells taken from the American woman Henrietta Lacks in the beginning of 1950s. Thanks to an anomaly which makes her cells able to reproduce perhaps infinitely, the scientists began to use and cultivate them in great amount for biomedical purposes. Thus Henrietta became immortal and she lives all around the world. She was sent to space, her DNA was the first one to be cloned, her cells were used to create the polio vaccine. However, not many have heard about Henrietta herself. What have these events done to her family? What kind of ethical and religious questions has the process brought? The style of the comics is based on handmade work with photographs showing real persons, places and events.
For the first time this year, KOMA has announced a Call for Comics or Opencall. We have invited all professionals and amateurs to participate on the festival in its theme of EXTINCTION AND ENDANGERED SPECIES. We have been sent 23 sketched and finished comics from which we chose ten most interesting ones to be exhibited. The pieces present various topics from artificial intelligence to personal stories.
